Sir Ralph Furse


Sir Ralph Furse (1887-1973) is recognized by many as 'the father of the modern Colonial Service'. He was instrumental in professionalising the Colonial Service and insisting on selection by references and interviews rather than the more traditional written exams. However, to safeguard the principle of open competition, a colonial service appointments board was established to review appointments.
