Shipping off Hong Kong

This Chinese School painting nicely illustrates the meeting of East and West as the early colony plugged China into the international trading system via the British Empire. It also notes the importance of security with the early fortifications being prominently portrayed.

The original of this painting can be seen at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
