Singapore Causeway


The Singapore Causeway hinted at the closeness of the island of Singapore to the Malayan mainland, however the geographical proximity could not overcome the different experiences of the urban and more racially homogenous Singaporeans with the varied landscape and mixes of races through the large landmass of Malaya. This 1950s picture shows the relative lack of traffic between Singapore and the mainland.
