The Vice-regal Lodge was designed by Henry Irwin and built in the Jacobean Revival style during Lord Dufferin’s time as Viceroy. Its construction started in 1880 and it was completed by 1888. The structure draws inspiration from the architectural style of the English Renaissance, and also reflects elements of the castles of the Scottish Highlands. It was designed to make the British feel an element of affinity with home in the Summer capital of the Raj.
The picture below was painted in 1893 by Major-General John Ardagh not long before the author was stationed in the area and visited the lodge for various balls and functions.
