San Juan de Ulua Prisoners

This print shows the Spanish Inquisition dispensing summary justice to the 'heretic' English sailors captured by the Spaniards. There was little love lost between the Catholics and Protestants and the vast majority of the captives were tortured terribly before being executed. Remarkably, one English sailor managed to walk through America and have himself rescued by fishing boats at Newfoundland, but his tale was the exception and supplied its own privations.
