The Surrender

This 1889 picture by John Seymour shows Drake accepting the surrender of Pedro de Valdes on the Rosario during the Armada. Drake was actually criticised from leaving the main fleet to pursue the stricken Rosario and take it as a prize. At the time, he was supposed to be leading the rest of the fleet during the night, but he turned off his lantern in order to go after the Rosario. His crew would have delighted in the prize as it would mean a much bigger bonus for their own pay packets to have taken such rich pickings.
