Sir Walter Raleigh's Map of Virginia
Sir Walter Raleigh was the half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert and travelled with him on his ill-fated journey to Newfoundland and the New World. Undaunted, Sir Walter picked up the challenge of Elizabethan exploration and set about organising expeditions with a view to colonising Virginia - named in honour of his Queen - Queen Elizabeth.
