Arrogance (or Nonchalance)

The small note at bottom right of this cartoon says ‘Etched by GC’ so is the work of George Cruikshank, also published in April 1824. Shela, or Sheelagh, was St Patrick’s wife and is seen rigorously pushing the arrogant officers of the 10th Hussar out of Ireland, banishing the ‘vermin’ in the same way that St Patrick allegedly banished snakes from the Emerald Isle. The expression ‘Trotting out’ is used again and the lament “The 10th don’t swim” satirises the claim that ‘the 10th don’t dance’. The image is courtesy of the British Museum.
