Interior of a Dancing School

McCleary’s version of this cartoon, no.8 on the Index list, is almost identical to George Cruickshank’s ‘Drilling 1/10th of the Military in the Manual Exercise’ published by Fairburn in London on 15 April 1824. Tim Dooly, the dancing teacher, is exactly similar in both cartoons but the frightened officer of the 10th Hussars differs. Cruickshank’s boy piper appears to be blowing into the bagpipes while the McCleary piper manages to play music without the aid of breath. This oversight would seem to suggest that Cruickshank drew the original cartoon, in London, and McCleary copied it. This cartoon was found at the website of Na Píobairí Uilleann.
