Officer, TSM and Privates in Stables 1889

A cartoon of 1889 by regimental cartoonist T P Chapman gives a coloured view of 10th Hussars uniforms that shows how the privates dressed for work in the stables. The men are in white work trousers and khaki shirts. But the striking thing is the red tent caps. They are similar in shape to the officers’ blue and gold tent caps and have unexplained tufts on top. The officer is in undress frock coat, with dress trousers and gold-banded pill-box forage cap. The worried-looking NCO is the Troop Sergeant Major wearing a patrol jacket which has three gold chevrons on his right arm. Above them is a silver regimental Plume arm badge and an embroidered crown above that. In the background is another man who appears to be exempt from this parade, probably an old sweat. His red cap is more shapeless, and worn on the side of the head.
