Officer Group, India 1909

The 10th Hussars were stationed at Rawalpindi from 1907 and this 1909 group photo shows the hot climate khaki service dress worn for everyday duties. The tunic had breast and hip pockets and the front was fastened with small round plain gilt buttons resembling the ball buttons that were worn on the old pre-1855 hussar dolman. There were no collar badges, but the Wolseley helmet had the regimental badge on the front. This helmet replaced the hot climate cork helmet worn in the Boer War. It was generally adopted in 1904 but had been introduced a few years earlier in West Africa. The officers are wearing the dress pouch-belt over their left shoulder and have jodhpurs and brown knee boots. Swords were not carried in this order of dress. The central seated figure is the CO Lieutenant-Colonel John Vaughan who worked tirelessly to eliminate malaria in 1907-8 after the regiment moved from Mhow to Rawalpindi.
