Captain Arthur Barthorp


Arthur Barthorp was born in 1834 at Hollesley in Suffolk, the son of John Barthorp and Mary Elisa Stow. He was commissioned into the 10th as a cornet on 13 July 1858, lieutenant on 17 June 1859, captain 10 May 1864. He disappears from the army list in 1874. He was the commander of C Troop between 1864 and 1873 during which time the Troop became part of an experimental C Squadron for a year from 1869-70. He commanded C Squadron for that year. He was a keen polo player and captained the regimental team at a time when the game was in its infancy. In Sep 1861 he married Caroline Tweed and they had a son and two daughters. They lived in Hampton Wick, and in 1891 moved to Paddington. He died in 1906. The photo shows him in 1871 in the dress uniform of the 10th Hussars with the rank of captain.
