Capture of Baggage Wagons

The stories of various units claiming their share of the plunder after the Battle of Vittoria cause as much confusion as the looting itself. The 13th Light Dragoons claim to have captured Joseph’s carriage and possessions but lost them all to an infantry regiment. The 14th Light Dragoons ended up with a royal chamber pot. It is said that the haul was valued at a million pounds. There were auctions of various items that must have enriched some officers and soldiers. This painting shows many wagons being captured and on the right of the picture, ladies in an open carriage are in despair at the failure of their escape.
