Camel Detachment

The Detachment of the 10th Hussars selected to join the Camel Regiment for the Gordon Relief Expedition of 1885. This photo was taken at Shorncliffe in September 1884 and shows the NCOs and men parading in two ranks wearing dress uniform and displaying medals for the Afghan War of 1878-9 and Egyptian medals for the Sudan campaign. There are two officers standing out in front, the furthest is Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel John Palmer Brabazon. His second-in-command, nearest to us, is Lieutenant the Hon George Leopold Bryan. He was born on 22 Jan 1857, the son of the 2nd Baron Bellew of Barmeath. His mother was Augusta Bryan, and George changed his name from Bellew to Bryan in 1880. In 1911 he inherited the title 4th Baron Bellew when his brother Charles died. He reached the rank of major in the regiment and later fought in the Boer War and World War One. He died on 15 June 1935.
