Lord Southampton

Charles Henry Fitzroy was born in London on 11 May 1867, the son of the 3rd Baron Southampton and Hon Ismaia Catherine Nugent. He succeeded to the title of 4th Baron Southampton on 16 July 1872. He joined the 10th Hussars as a 2nd Lieut on 14 Sep 1887, promoted to lieutenant 7 Mar 1889 and captain 14 Sep 1892. He did not serve with the 10th in the Boer War and resigned his commission on 10 Jan 1900. The photo shows him in the uniform of the 10th Hussars with subaltern rank, pre-1892. A caricature of 1907 by Spy shows him in hunting costume with the caption ‘The Sinner’.

He served in World War One as a major commanding 3/4th Territorial Battalion the Green Howards. They were raised in April 1915. He remained in command until Nov 1918. This unit stayed in England as a training unit which sent draughts out to France. They were at first quartered in tents in the grounds of Northallerton Grammar School, but during a bitterly cold wet winter conditions were intolerable. Vigorous protests failed to provide alternative arrangements so Lord Southampton took matters into his own hands and commandeered all the suitable buildings in the town as billets. In the Spring of 1916 they moved to Redcar where they were given responsibility for coastal defence. Further moves took them to Catterick, Sutton near Hull, and Hornsea.

He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel 1919 and appointed OBE. He had married on 9 July 1892 Lady Hilda Mary Dundas daughter of the Marquess of Zetland. They had 4 children; 3 daughters and a son. Lieutenant-Colonel Lord Southampton died on 7 Oct 1958 aged 91.
