Hon Clement Freeman-Mitford DSO


The Hon Clement Bertram Ogilvy Freeman-Mitford was born on 14 Dec 1876, the 2nd of 9 children of Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, 1st Baron Redesdale, and Lady Clementina Ogilvy. He was educated at Eton and commissioned into the 10th Hussars on 15 Nov 1899, promoted to lieutenant on 3 Oct 1900, captain 10 Oct 1904, major 7 Aug 1912. He was adjutant of the 10th Hussars from 14 May 1904. He was wounded twice during the Boer War. He was killed on 13 May 1915, aged 38. His death occurred in heroic circumstances, during an attack made by the 10th Hussars that also resulted in the deaths of the CO Lt-Col Shearman and Captain Gerald Stewart. Clem, as he was called by his fellow officers, lived at Batsford Park, Moreton-in-Marsh. He was married to Lady Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy daughter of the 6th Earl of Airlie, on 25 Nov 1909. They had two daughters, Rosemary and Clementine who both died in 2005.
