The 11th Earl of Airlie

David Stanley William Ogilvy was born in Florence on 20 Jan 1856, the third child and eldest son of David Ogilvy the 10th Earl of Airlie, and Hon Henrietta Blanche Stanley. He was educated at Eton and went on to Oxford, Balliol College. Initially he was commissioned into the Scots Guards in 1874 but transferred to the 10th Hussars in June 1875. He served with them in Afghanistan in 1878-9 and in the Sudan in 1884. He then volunteered for the Nile Expedition in 1885 and was appointed Brigade Major under Sir Herbert Stewart. At the battle of Abu Klea he was wounded but killed the Arab who attacked him. From 1889 to 1895 he was on staff service and appointed adjutant of the Hampshire Yeomanry. He transferred to the 12th Lancers in 1897 and commanded them in the Boer War. He was wounded twice and then, having led a charge to save the guns at Diamond Hill on 11June 1900, he was killed. The Boer snipers were picking off the gunners of Q Battery and the guns were in danger of being captured. The 12th Lancers were ordered to charge the enemy and it was in this action the Earl had his horse shot. He managed to mount another horse and complete the charge which was successful but he strayed into a dangerous area of the battle and ordered a withdrawal. As he was in the act of turning back he was hit by a bullet which killed him instantly. Seventeen men of the 12th Lancers and one other officer were killed in this action.

Between 1885 and 1900 he was a Representative Peer of Scotland and Deputy Lieutenant of Forfar. He was married to Lady Mabell Frances Elizabeth Gore on 19 Jan 1886, at St George’s Hanover Square. She was the daughter of the Earl of Arran. They had six children, 3 daughters and 3 sons. The youngest child was Captain Hon Patrick Ogilvy MC who was killed in WW1, on 9 Oct 1917, serving in the Irish Guards. Three months earlier his elder brother, David the 12th Earl, won the MC serving in the 10th Hussars. He was the father of Angus Ogilvy who married Princess Marina.
