Lord William Cavendish-Bentinck DSO


William Augustus Cavendish-Bentinck, born on 31 Jan 1865, the son of Lt-General Arthur Cavendish-Bentinck and Augusta Browne 1st Baroness Bolsover was a half brother of William the 6th Duke of Portland. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the 10th Hussars on 16 Nov 1887, lieutenant 10 Aug 1889, captain 1 Feb 1893, major 11 Oct 1901. He was with the 10th in South Africa during the Boer War. He died on 4 Nov 1903 aged 38. There is a horizontal monument to him in the churchyard of St Winifred’s, Holbeck, Bassetlaw, Notts. It is inscribed: To the memory of Lord William Augustus Cavendish Bentinck Major 10 Royal Hussar DSO born Jany 31 1865 Died at sea while on his way to rejoin his Regiment in India November 4th 1903.
