Edward Cunard

Edward Cunard was born on 2 Jan 1855, the son of Sir Edward Cunard 2nd Bt and Mary McEvers (5th child, 2nd son). He joined the 10th Hussars as a sub lieutenant on 21 Sep 1874. He died on 29 Aug 1877 at the age of 22. In the summer of 1877 the 10th Hussars were stationed at Muttra in India. During a game of polo Lieutenant Edward Cunard fell from his horse and was fatally injured. Puzzlingly, the regimental history says that this happened at Shorncliffe. The regimental depot was at Canterbury in Kent at this time, and at various times detachments left India to join the depot. In each case the officer accompanying the detachment is named, but Cunard is not mentioned. The history has this to say about Edward Cunard: ‘This young officer was full of promise, accomplished, a brilliant musician, a good rider, and his loss was felt deeply by all who knew him.’
