Major Edward Levett


Edward Levett was born on 18 Dec 1832 at Yoxall, Staffordshire. He was the son of John Levett and Sophia Eliza Kennedy of Rowsley near Bakewell, Derby. He entered the 10th Hussars as an cornet on 17 Aug 1852, promoted to lieutenant 6 June 1854. He transferred to the 19th Regiment and fought in the Crimean War with distinction at Inkerman and the siege of Sebastopol including the assault on the Redan on 8 Sep 1854. After the war he rejoined the 10th Hussars and was promoted to captain on 24 Nov 1857. He reached his majority on 16 Oct 1860. Edward was married in Nov 1862 to Caroline Georgiana, daughter of Charles Longley, Archbishop of Canterbury. His second wife was Susan Alice Arkwright. He and Caroline had two daughters, Caroline Agnes, and Maud Sophia who was a published writer. They lived at Wychnor park, Staffordshire. Edward died in 1899.
