Edward Stacey


Edward Stacey was born c1830 the son of Edwin Stacey, a wealthy brewer, banker and mayor living in West Malling near Maidstone, Kent. His mother was Maria Penfold. The father, Edwin had been a cornet in the 12th Light Dragoons, serving in the Peninsula. His grandfather, Flint Stacey, also mayor of Maidstone, had declined a knighthood from George III. Edward entered the army as a cornet in the 10th Hussars in 1 Dec 1846, promoted to lieutenant in 1851 and in 1858 he transferred to the 18th Hussars with the rank of Captain. This watercolour by Herbert Luther Smith was painted in 1850 and shows Cornet Edward Stacey in his regimental frockcoat holding a gold laced peaked forage cap and with a cane and cloak lined with red silk.
