Yacub Khan's Escort

This photo was taken in May 1879 when the 10th Hussars were present at the peace negotiations. The escort provided by the British for the Amir Yacub Khan, was two squadrons, one of Guides and one of the 10th. The 10th squadron was commanded by Captain M C Wood, but the whole escort was under the command of Major Edward Wood who rode beside Yacub Khan with the Afghan Prime Minister and commander-in-chief behind. The road was lined for a distance of 3 miles by the 10th Hussars, 11th Bengal Lancers and RHA. General Sam Browne and Sir Louis Cavagnari also rode besides the Amir. The officers and men in this photo appear to be wearing the plain blue serge frocks introduced for the 10th Hussars a few years previously in 1875.
