Captain Hon Everard Stourton


The Honourable Everard Joseph Stourton was born on 18 Feb 1834 the son of Charles, 19th Baron Stourton and Hon Mary Lucy Clifford of Cave Castle near Hull. He was commissioned as a cornet into the 8th Hussars on 29 Feb 1856, lieutenant 17 Sep 1857, captain 11 May 1860. He served with that regiment in the Indian Mutiny in Rajputana in 1858-59. He was present at the battles of Kotoria and Kushana. He first appears on the army list for the 10th Hussars in 1861 and in this photo he wears the undress stable dress of the 10th Hussars. He served with the 10th as a captain until his death in 1869. On 7 May 1862, at Crosby Hall, Lancs, he married Hon Fernina Maria Magdeliena Bellew daughter of the 1st Lord Bellew of Barmeath; they had four sons and two daughters. The family lived at Allerton Park, now Allerton Castle, N Yorks. He died on 20 Feb 1869 at the age of 35, and was buried in the vault at Allerton Park. There is a memorial plaque to him on the wall of St Wilfred’s RC Church in York, erected by the officers of the 10th Hussars.
