Ralph Fisher-Childe CB


Ralph Bromfield Willington Fisher-Childe was a long serving officer of the 10th, joining as a sub-lieutenant on 27 June 1874 and retiring in 1900. He commanded the regiment from 3 Aug 1896 to 15 Nov 1900. He served in most of the conflicts that involved the regiment’s active service: Afghanistan 1878-80 including the march from Kabul to Kandahar, and Waziristan in 1881. He had been in India continuously for 7 years so returned to the UK in April 1882. He did not accompany the 10th to the Sudan in 1884. When the South African War broke out in 1899 Colonel Fisher was nearing the end of his command, but he led the regiment in the dash to Kimberley, the chasing of Cronje to the Modder, Poplar Grove, Driefontein, the march to Ladybrand and the disaster at Koorn Spruit. When he retired in November 1900 he was appointed CB. He had served in the 10th Hussars for 26 years 142 days. He was also an accomplished rider in sporting events and became a famous jockey and steeplechaser.
