The Hon Henry Cecil Lowther


Henry Cecil Lowther was born on 27 July 1790 at Lowther Castle, Westmorland. He was the son of Lieut-Col William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale and Augusta Fane. He was the second son so his brother, William inherited the title. But William only had one child, a daughter, so that Henry’s son became 3rd Earl of Lonsdale. Henry Lowther was educated at Westminster School, and he entered the army on 16 July 1807 as cornet in the 7th Hussars. He was a lieutenant on 21 July 1808 and a captain on 4 Oct 1810. He served with the 7th in the Peninsula during the early 1808-09 campaign, fighting at Mayorga, Sahagun and Benevente, and the retreat to Corunna. He went back out to Spain and Portugal from 1812 to 1814, and was made a major in the 10th Hussars on 12 Nov 1814. He was with the 10th until 20 April 1817 when he transferred to command the 12th Regiment as lieutenant-colonel.

He was a longstanding Member of Parliament for Westmorland from 1812 to 1867, Father of the House of Commons from 1862 to 67. He was Deputy Lieutenant of Cumberland. He was also a well-known cricketer, playing for Hampshire and Surrey between 1818 and 1839. In 1830 he was appointed Colonel of the Cumberland Militia. On 19 May 1817 he married Lady Lucy Sherard daughter of the 5th Earl of Harborough. They lived at Barley Thorpe, Rutland where he died on 6 Dec 1867. They had 6 children, three daughters and three sons.
