Major Howard’s Body

The huge fresco by Daniel Maclise commissioned in 1858 and completed in 1861 portrays the moment when Wellington met Blücher after the battle of Waterloo. There are other things going on, connected with the aftermath, including the recovery of the body of Major the Hon Frederick Howard, ‘young gallant Howard’ of Byron’s Childe Harold poem. On the right of the detail seen here are three grenadiers supporting Howard who is dressed in hussar uniform. In fact his body was not retrieved until the next day, by a party of men from his regiment.
