In Afghanistan

Orlando Norie’s painting of the 10th Hussars marching through a mountain pass in Afghanistan is based on descriptions of the service dress uniform. They retained the dress breeches which for the officers had gold stripes, yellow cloth for the men. The khaki frock had to be thick enough to protect them in the cold nights. White helmets were stained khaki and it is not known whether they retained the brass spike on top for active service. In this painting the trumpeter has a sabretache while the officers do not. The men wear blue puttees and the officers are depicted as having brown knee boots.
