Assistant Surgeon John Thomas Milburn


John Thomas Milburn entered The Durham College of Medicine at Newcastle-upon-Tyne as a student in 1854-55 and passed the College of Surgeons in 1859. He was assistant surgeon in the 25th Kings Own Borderers until 14 Jan 1862 when he transferred to the 100th Royal Canadian Regiment. He joined the 10th Hussars in 1865 as Staff Assistant Surgeon. He left the 10th Hussars in 1872 to join the Staff. According to his brother he died in 1874 from a brain injury after falling from a horse. The photo is of Dr Milburn in the dress uniform of the 10th Hussars. Instead of a fur busby he has a cocked hat with black feathers. His sleeve ornamentation is for the rank of captain but is covered by a black mourning arm band.
