HMS Jumna 1884

The Jumna was one of 5 purpose-built transports paid for by the Indian Government and launched in 1866. Although built in different yards the Jumna and her sister ships, the Crocodile, Euphrates, Malabar and Serapis were all of the same design, tonnage and dimensions. Each ship could transport a full battalion of infantry with wives and children, or about 1,200 people. The ship was commanded by Captain Uvedale Singleton RN. After the 10th Hussars embarked at Bombay, she sailed down the coast to Vingorla to take on board the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers who were also to fight in the Sudan. After Aden there were three days at sea until they arrived at Suakin. Entrance to the harbour there was hampered by bad weather and coral reefs. The photo was taken in 1884 but it is not known where.
