Lord Alwyne Frederick Compton DSO


Alwyne Frederick Compton was born on 5 June 1855, the son of Admiral William Compton, 4th Marquess of Northampton and Eliza, daughter of Admiral Sir George Elliot. He was the 6th out of 8 children, and 3rd out of 4 sons. Lord Alwyne was educated at Eton. His initial commission was with the 31st Regiment as a sub lieutenant on 18 Mar 1874. He exchanged into the Grenadier Guards on 18 Mar 1875. He joined the 10th as a lieutenant on 20 Aug 1879. He fought at El Teb and Tamai in 1884 and was appointed regimental adjutant the following year. He left the regiment in 1886, retiring from the army. In the Boer War he volunteered and served in the Imperial Yeomanry as a captain in the 28th (Bedfordshire) Company of the 4th Battalion IY. He was rewarded for his service with the rank of major and a DSO. In civilian life he was an MP from 1895 to 1911, mostly as MP for the Biggleswade Division of Bedfordshire. In March 1911 he was appointed Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds but he died on 16 Dec 1911 at the age of 56. He was married (on 31 July 1886) to Mary Evelyn Violet Vyner. They had two sons. He was also Deputy Lieutenant of Argyllshire. the photo shows him in as a lieutenant in the levée dress of the 10th Hussars c1883.
