Prince of Wales's Medal

The regimental history claims that the Prince of Wales presented a silver medal commemorative of his visit to India, to all the officers who had acted as personal escort to him. It also says that the CO, Lord Kerr and the whole of the officers accompanied the Prince as personal escort to the station when he left Agra. But earlier in his visit to Delhi the regiment provided a personal escort squadron of 114 men that included only 3 officers to accompany him on his tour or the area including Futtehpore Sikri and Gwalior. It is safe to assume, however, that all the officers of the regiment received a medal from the Prince, who was their Colonel. This specimen is inscribed around the edge, ‘Captain Hugh Sutlej Gough, X Hussars from Albert Edward’ and was sold by Dix Noonan Webb in 2015. A total of 165 of these medals were issued. The 10th Hussars had 31 officers in 1876 including the QM, Surgeons etc.
