Pursuit of the Enemy

The cavalry had few opportunities during the battle of Tamai but were employed usefully in the pursuit of the Mahdist tribesmen after the defeat of Osman Digna’s army. This painting by Orlando Norie depicts the 10th Hussars armed with captured spears. In a letter written to the Duke of Cambridge by Colonel Sir Redvers Buller who commanded the 1st Infantry Brigade, he said:

‘Throughout the day Stewart handled the cavalry admirably. I think your Royal Highness would have enjoyed it, they were always just where they should be, and did right well: they suffered heavily, but that I think was the fault of their tactics. I do not myself believe that the sabre is any use against spear-armed savages.’
