Race for the Kopje

In this painting, some men of A Squadron gallop to the top of the hill while others dismount to fire on the Boers who attempt to beat the hussars to the summit. The highest part of the hill is on the right of the picture where two dismounted men can be seen near the top. The painting is titled ‘A Troop of the 10th Hussars Racing the Boers for a Kopje Above the Modder River’ by war artist Godfrey Douglas Giles who completed the work in 1902. He had also painted the regiment in action at El Teb and the Battle of Tamai. The painting (42 x 64ins) was presented to the 10th Hussars by the Duke of Portland.
