Paymaster Richard John Elrington


Richard John Erlington joined the army as an company ensign in the 47th Lancashire Regiment of Foot on 24 Mar 38, the same regiment as his elder brother Thomas William Erlington. Richard was promoted to lieutenant on 29 May 1840. He transferred to the 13th Light Dragoons as Paymaster from 2 Feb 1844. On 7 July 1848 he exchanged with Lieut Edmund Frith as Paymaster into the 10th Hussars. He served in the Crimean War and was present at the capture of Tchorgaun, the battle of Tchernaya and the siege of Sebastopol. He was made Honorary Major on 1 Jan 1860, and was in that rank when he died of scarlatina on 21 March 1870. The 10th were stationed at Brighton and Shorncliffe at the time and the whole regiment paraded to attend his funeral on 24th March. The photo shows him in the undress uniform of the 10th Hussars c1864.
