Captain Robert Arnold


Robert Arnold was wounded at Waterloo while serving as a lieutenant in the 10th Hussars. He was shot through the body while leading his Troop against a French square. This miniature was painted c1824 after he had been promoted in 1818. His Waterloo medal is pinned to his pelisse. He was educated at Winchester and commissioned firstly into the 4th Foot in 1809 and then exchanged into the 10th in 1812. He was in action with them in the Peninsula, wounded at the siege of Badajoz and at Vitoria. He reached the rank of major in 1825, then promoted to lieutenant-colonel in the 16th Lancers in 1826, commanding them in Afghanistan. He died at Kabul whilst in command in 1839 with the rank of brigadier-general.
