Capt William Chaine


William Chaine was born in Antrim on 1 Jan 1838 the son of William Chaine of Moylina. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant on 12 Dec 1856 into the 7th Dragoon Guards. He was promoted to lieutenant on 9 Oct 1857 and captain on 10 May 1864. In June 1864 he transferred to the 10th Hussars. He commanded the depot Troop which on 18 Nov 1872 marched from Colchester to the Cavalry Depot at Canterbury when the 10th were ordered to send 6 Service Troops to India. He was a brevet-major in Oct 1877 and retired from the army in 1881 as an honorary lieutenant-colonel.

On 4 Mar 1881 he was appointed Marshal of Ceremonies to Queen Victoria, rising to Assistant Master of Ceremonies in 1887. He resigned after Victoria’s death in 1901 and was awarded the MVO by King Edward. He was married to a widow, Maria Henrietta Sophia Phipps, daughter of Sir Charles Beaumont Phipps. The wedding took place at Kensington Palace on 4 Dec 1872. They had one child in 1874, a son, William Robert Algernon Chaine. Lieutenant-Colonel Chaine died on 3 July 1916. The photo shows him as a captain in the undress uniform of the 10th Hussars in 1864.
