Captain William Mayne


William Francis Mayne was born in 1833. He joined the 10th Hussars as a cornet on 12 May 1854, promoted to lieutenant 12 May 1857, captain 14 May 1858. He served in the Crimea in 1855, including the capture of Tchorgaun, the Battle of the Tchernaya, and siege of Sebastopol. Captain Mayne retired in 1859 and died in 1877. He married Edith Caroline Talbot producing five sons and two daughters, one of whom was born on 5 Aug 1863, the Rev Walter Nathaniel Mayne. William and Edith lived at Rahagey, Auchnacloy, Co Tyrone. He was a JP. The photo shows him in the dress uniform of the 10th Hussars in the rank of captain c1859. He wears the medal for his service in the Crimean War.
