Private, 1787

This figure is a detail, copied from an aquatint engraved by R Pollard after W Mason published on 29 Mar 1787. It is titled ‘His Majesty Reviewing his Troops on Blackheath’. The uniform is similar to the light dragoon uniform depicted in Stubbs’s well-known painting of 1793. But the helmet is not the Tarleton style featured in that painting; it has a plate at the front emblazoned with the regimental badge of the Prince of Wales feathers. The peak is strangely striped, and although there is a yellow turban, there is no plume on the left side. The crossed belts support an ammunition pouch on his right hip, and a bayonet and sword on the left. The carbine muzzle is kept in a holster but it is not clear how the butt end is supported. The saddle cloth and holster cover are very similar to the later Stubbs painting.
