Mounted Private 1796

This print is not detailed but gives useful information on how the uniform had changed since 1793. In this year, 1796, the light dragoon helmets for all the regiments changed from having the plume on the left side in the facing colour to a white over red plume. This trooper still wears the older style helmet, which also has a yellow turban instead of the leopardskin or the dark blue turban. But his jacket has the newer style of white braid across the chest which is very much more closed up and has many buttons down the front and down the outside of the chest, forming three vertical rows. This is a move towards the hussar style of jacket. He has two shoulder-belts, one supporting the carbine on a spring clip, the other for the sword. His cloak is rolled up behind the saddle, dark blue with a white lining. The shabraque is very similar to the one worn by the mounted sergeant in the Stubbs painting but the round badge has a crown above and a suggestion of a wreath around it.
