Sword Exercises 1798

These two drawings are in a series of sword exercise illustrations for light dragoons. The left hand figure in the ‘Sword Arm Protect’ position shows the pattern of braiding on the back of the jacket. There are no shoulder scales or chains but a thin cord can be see on his left shoulder. The front of the jacket has white braiding across the chest and a white frame around the perimeter. The sword scabbard is suspended from slings that are attached to a hidden waist-belt under the jacket. The right side of the helmet clearly displays the large regimental badge, and the metal band over the peak shows the letters ‘X or P…’ The turban is patterned and clearly intended to be leopardskin. This is evidence that the Prince of Wales paid for the whole regiment to have leopardskin, not just the officers.
