Prince of Wales in Hyde Park 1799

A Royal Review took place in Hyde Park on 4 June 1799 in the presence of King George III and the Princes of Wales. Two well-known engravings were produced to commemorate the event; this one by Sir R K Porter was published on 1 Feb 1800. The colouring of the turban on the Prince’s helmet varied from print to print but in this monochrome version it looks dark and certainly not leopardskin. The Beechey painting of a review in 1799 (probably a different occasion) definitely depicts the Prince with a dark blue turban. The badge is shown clearly in this print, and the plume appears white over the top of the fur crest. The blue jacket has pale facings and in other drawings of this image the back of the jacket reveals a fairly simple pattern of braid which follows the back seams and terminates in trefoils near the shoulders. The front of the jacket can be seen in the Prince’s portrait painted by Beechey in 1798. The embroidered shabraque does not agree with other paintings or prints, many of which show a leopardskin saddle cover. However the British Military Library print of 1800 shown on this page, has an officer with a blue cloth shabraque having a double silver edge, embroidery and tassel.
