Officer’s Sabretache 1800

This detail from a British Military Library print published in October 1800 shows the sabretache worn by officers. The print has several inaccuracies such as the badge on the Tarleton helmet being on the left side. But the work put in by the artist to show the elaborate cypher on the sabretache suggests that he had a better knowledge of this than the rest of the uniform. There is no Prince of Wales feathers on the sabretache although there is on the corner of the shabraque. The GP cypher has the royal crown above. As the uniform was blue with silver lace and braid, it is safe to assume that, although the colourist was not very careful, the sabretache was blue with silver lace and embroidery.
