10th (North Lincoln) Regiment of Foot

Private 1742

The Cloathing Book of 1742 has prints showing the uniforms of privates of every British infantry and cavalry regiment. This illustration is of the 10th Regiment of Foot. The red coat has yellow facings and linings and is buttoned only at the waist, but the lapels were closed over on campaign. He has wide buff belts around his waist to hold his bayonet and hanger, and on his shoulder for the ammunition pouch.

Most of the regiments had distinctive uniquely-patterned lace edging the lapels and cuffs. But the 10th is listed as having plain lace in this year. This would normally mean white lace but this coloured print gives yellow lace. A later painting by Morier, in 1751, shows a much more elaborate pattern.
