18th Bengal Lancers Cavalry

S B Grimston

S B Grimston served in the regiment from 1887 to 1916. He was Adjutant from 17 Feb 1892 to 8 May 1896 while the regiment was stationed at Ferozepore. He was appointed Commanding Officer on 11 April 1910 and was in command when the regiment mobilised for the First World War. He relinquished command on 29 Aug 1916 and left for India where he was promoted to brigadier-general. He had been awarded the Legion d’Honneur in November 1915, and on his retirement from the regiment was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George. He died at a comparatively early age, on which occasion a brother officer wrote:

‘His was a strong character combined with personal charm; active at all games, he was loved and trusted by all who had the good fortune to serve under him.’
