George Lloyd Reilly Richardson was born on 20 Sep 1847, the son of Major-General Joseph Fletcher Richardson and Mary Hannah (neé Reilly). He was commissioned into the 38th Regiment of Foot in March 1866 and fought in the Hazara Expedition. He entered the 18th Bengal Cavalry in 1871 and was appointed Adjutant from 8 April 1876 to 8 April 1877. He commanded the regiment from 20 Nov 1891. In 1893 he went to England in command of an Indian Cavalry Guard of Honour to Queen Victoria on the occasion of the opening of the Imperial Institute. He received the CIE (Companion of the Indian Empire) on 28 July 1893.
Just prior to the Tirah Campaign of 1897 he commanded the Kurram Movable Column. On his retirement as CO of the regiment Brevet Colonel Richardson was appointed CB in 1898. He was promoted to major-general and fought at Peking in the Boxer Rebellion. He was elevated to KCB on 25 June 1900, and appointed CSI (Companion of the Star of India) on 24 July 1901. In 1906 he was promoted to lieutenant-general and appointed Colonel of the 18th Prince of Wales’s Own Tiwana Lancers. He retired from the army in 1909. When the regiment amalgamated with the 19th Fane’s Horse in 1921 he was appointed Colonel of the regiment until his death on 9 April 1931.
