A General Order from Calcutta in 1818 laid down instructions for Bengal native cavalry regiments. There were to be three Standards per regiment, one for each squadron, the first, dark blue with the Royal Arms, the second crimson with the EIC arms, the third in the facing colour with the regimental number in a Union wreath. Two of the Standards of the 7th Bengal Light Cavalry still exist, and the Standard illustrated here conforms to the 3rd Squadron Standard of the 7th BLC.
The dating of the standard is pre-1819 because the title of the regular Bengal cavalry regiments changed by order from Bengal Native Cavalry to Bengal Light Cavalry on 1 Jan 1819. The standard is ragged around the edges as it has had the fringe removed as well as the two swallow-tails. There are small devices in each of the four corners; top left is a mounted figure with raised sword, top right and bottom right have a trumpet crossed with a whip, and bottom left have the date of the raising of the regiment. The date 1787 is the year chosen for the raising, although there was a choice between 1777, 1787 and 1796 (see Raising of the Regiment on the main page).
The colour of the flag is orange, being the colour of the facings on the French grey jackets since 1811.
