Henry James Stannus CB


Henry James Stannus was born c 1825, the son of the Very Reverend James Stannus and Elizabeth Burrowes. He entered the Indian Army in 1840 and was in the disastrous Afghanistan campaign of 1842. He was present at the forcing of the Khyber Pass and the battle of Mamoo Khail. He commanded the personal escort of Sir Hugh Gough at the battle of Maharajpore and throughout the Gwalior campaign on 1843-44. He was in the Sutlej Campaign on 1845-46, serving in the Governor General’s Body Guard at Moodkee, Ferozeshah, Aliwal and Sobraon. In 1846 he took part in the Expedition to Kote Kangra, and the Punjab Campaign of 1848-49. He was at Rumnaggur and again commanded the cavalry escort of Lord Gough. He was at Chillianwallah, and, at Goojerat he was severely wounded. He was mentioned in despatches, given a wound pension for life and promoted from captain to brevet major. When the Indian Mutiny broke out in 1857 he was stationed at Meerut. He was serving in the 5th European Cavalry of the East India Company Army until 1862 when he was appointed Commanding Officer of the 20th Hussars with the rank of colonel. In 1851 he married Sarah Oliver and they had five daughters. He died on 30 May 1898.
