Orlando Norie’s painting of Indian Irregular Cavalry shows mounted men with long matchlocks strapped to their backs and one man armed with a lance. Gardner’s Horse were dressed in green alkalaks at this time, although it is not clear which unit is depicted. The regiment was issued with carbines in 1846 to replace the matchlocks, but the men may have preferred their former weapons.
