Captain D E Whitworth was separated from his charger ‘Orleans’ during the gallop to Kildare Trench, in which both he and the horse were wounded. Once Kildare was captured, Whitworth was awarded the Military Cross for his efforts to gain contact with a neighbouring unit. The painting shows Orleans wounded and lost in no-man’s land. It was painted by Lucy Hargreaves and donated by Brigadier Whitworth to the National Army Museum.
