While the 1st Bombay Cavalry was stationed at Poona in 1878 the officers were photographed on a bench outside the mess. The photo of the Indian officers can also be seen in this section. This photo shows the British officers, six of whom are wearing drill order, a green kurta with three buttons down the front and silver cord on the collar and cuffs. By this time the collars were probably red for the 1st Regiment, but the cuffs do not seem to reflect this facing colour. There seem to be a variety of lungis (turbans) worn. The pouch-belts are plain dark leather with silver pickers and chains. The officer standing on the right of the picture has a plain white pouch-belt and a different clasp to his waist-belt. He has a kummerband but this item is not apparent on the others. The breeches are dark blue with a double silver stripe, and they have swords and sabretaches slung from the waist-belt.
Two officers are wearing dark green patrol jackets with broad black mohair lace. The officer seated third from the right is in a different uniform, a blue patrol jacket with black cords, and blue trousers. His white helmet with gilt spike is on the ground. He has a sword but no sabretache. This is Surgeon E W Young who joined the regiment on 23 Oct 1878.
Other officers in this photo are: standing, left to right, Lieutenant L A Gordon, Colonel James Blair VC, Lieutenant Gervase Newport Tinley, and an unidentified captain, perhaps attached from another regiment. Seated left to right are: Lieutenant Edward Locke Elliot, Major E G Jenkins, Lieutenant H Hay, Surgeon Young, Lieutenant F W S Jackson, and Major A R Heyland.
